Mr. Keen was first heard on NBC on Oct. 12, 1937, as a 15-minute serial. The show moved to CBS in 1942 and remained a serial until 1943, when it became a weekly half-hour show. Mr. Keen and Mike Clancy were primarily homicide detectives. Bennett Kilpack was the longest-running Mr. Keen; Philip Clarke took over late in the run. Jim Kelly was Mike Clancy, and Richard Leonard directed.

The public loved the caring, fatherly sleuth who could resolve any problem and knew just how to handle any situation. James Kelly co-stars as Mike Clancy, the Irish former cop who not only assists the sleuth, but considers himself the old gentleman's bodyguard.

It was produced by Frank and Anne Hummert, who based it upon Robert W. Chambers' 1906 novel The Tracer of Lost Persons. The sponsors included Whitehall Pharmacal (as in Anacin, Kolynos Toothpaste, BiSoDol antacid mints, Hill's cold tablets and Heet liniment), Dentyne, Aerowax, RCA Victor and Chesterfield cigarettes. It aired on the NBC Blue network until 1947, when it switched to CBS.
