En su antigua condición de tutor y consejero del emperador Nerón, el filósofo y hombre de Estado Séneca era tremendamente consciente de la brevedad de la vida, la suya propia se vio truncada cuando el emperador le ordenó que se suicidara, por su presunta implicación en una conspiración. Y Séneca demostró ser consecuente con lo que predicaba, y el compromiso a lo largo de toda su vida con el estoicismo le permitió conducirse con dignidad hasta el final.

Parece ser una continuación de La República y el Timeo, es de carácter inconcluso y su contenido describe la guerra entre la Atenas prehelénica y la Atlántida, hipotético imperio occidental e isla misteriosa descrita por el sofista Critias. Éste sostiene que la Atlántida existió en una época muy remota, y la sitúa «más allá de las columnas de Heracles». Dicha isla mitológica fue tragada por el mar y se perdió para siempre.

The Meditations is a series of personal writings by Marcus Aurelius, Roman emperor from 161 to 180 AD, which records his private notes to himself and his ideas on Stoic philosophy. A major theme of Meditations is the importance of analyzing one's judgment of self and others and the development of a cosmic perspective.

The Enchiridion is a collection of the most profound teachings of Epictetus (c. AD 55-135), who taught that philosophy is a way of life and not just a matter of theory. The Enchiridion is a canonical text of Stoic philosophy and contains all the fundamentals. Among them is the principle of not being concerned with that which is out of one’s control. Misfortune should not disturb the individual at all and should not be perceived negatively.

To Epictetus, all external events are beyond our control, and we should calmly accept whatever happens. However, individuals are responsible for their own actions, which they can examine and control through self-discipline.

In 1929, Martin Heidegger (1889-1976) published his remarkable book Kant and the Problem of Metaphysics. "De la brevedad de la Vida", es un ensayo de Séneca, en el que el autor utiliza la prosa epistolar para dar a conocer, en veinte breves apartados, sus pensamientos filosóficos sobre la vida. Séneca plantea y desarrolla una paradoja, pues, frente a la idea generalizada de que la vida es breve, él considera que es larga si se sabe vivir de acuerdo con la razón, en el camino de la sabiduría y la virtud. Lo que exige no dejarse arrastrar por las pasiones y las obligaciones no rectas. Probablemente esta obra estuvo influenciada por la experiencia de sus años de destierro.

The full title of Seneca’s work Of Providence is "Why do misfortunes happen to good men, if providence exists?". The longer title reflects the essay’s theme which is more concerned with theodicy and the question of why bad things happen to good people, rather than with providence. The essay is written as a dialogue in six brief sections, opened by Lucilius complaining to his friend Seneca that misfortunes befall to good people too. How does this fit with the goodness associated with the design of providence?

Fra le molte ragioni per amare la filosofia l'autore ne propone qui sette, che, pur riconducibili ad aspetti tipici del filosofare, si possono applicare anche nella vita quotidiana. Eccole: 1. fare domande, come e quali; 2. usare parole per rispondere a queste domande; 3. addurre ragioni per giustificare le risposte; 4. apprezzare il dissenso, purché accompagnato da argomentazioni; 5. intrecciare rapporti con altre concezioni del mondo e con il sapere scientifico.

The Nature of Things was written in the 1st century BC by Roman polymath Lucretius. It is written as a didactic poem, and explains Epicurean physics.
