Er ist der deutsche Dichterkönig schlechthin: Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749 - 1832). Stéphane Mallarmé (1842-1898), geboren in Paris, war einer der Wegbereiter der modernen Lyrik. In seinem bekanntesten Werk, dem "Nachmittag eines Fauns), beschreibt er die Geschichte eines Fauns oder Satyrs, der aus seinem Mittagsschlaf erwacht. Monologisch erzählt er, was er am Morgen erlebt hat. Oder hat er es vielleicht nur geträumt? Das Gedicht wurde in der Musik mehrmals thematisiert; Debussys sinfonische Dichtung ist weltberühmt.

Er gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Dichter der literarischen Moderne: Rainer Maria Rilke (1875 - 1926). In 1892, Alfred Tennyson, the official Poet Laureate of Great Britain, died. According to custom, a new Laureate now had to be chosen by the Prime Minister. But on this occasion, uniquely, there was a problem. Many different candidates for the position were suggested, but for several years, none were chosen.
