Han blev af sin franske forlægger opfordret til at skrive denne lille bog om Notre-Dames historie og betydning, både faktuelt og kulturhistorisk. Ken Folletts kæmpe bestseller "Jordens søjler" handler om bygningen af en fiktiv katedral i England, og arbejdet med denne bog gjorde forfatteren til en slags ekspert i bygning af katedraler i Middelalderen.
