Known as the "Prince of Preachers", Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892) was an English Baptist preacher and pastor of the congregation of the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London for 38 years. Spurgeon authored an autobiography, commentaries, books on prayer, devotionals, magazines, poetry, hymns, and sermons. 

As an English-speaking denomination, Baptists originated within 17th-century Puritanism as an offshoot of Congregationalism. English Baptists migrated to the American colonies during the 17th century. During the 18th century, the Great Awakening resulted in the expansion of the denomination, and the conversion of many slaves to Baptist churches. Baptist congregations formed their first national organization the Triennial Convention in the early 1800.

Charles Spurgeon was one of 19th-century Britain’s most prominent spiritual voices. In this sermon, he discusses how Christian death is always inevitable, acceptable, timely, and honorable. Nineteenth-century preacher Charles Spurgeon may have surprised some when he delivered this sermon on the doctrine of election. Though predestination aligned with Spurgeon’s denominational beliefs as a Particular Baptist, it was still an unpopular sermon topic.
