In 1941, Irène Némirovsky sat down to write a book that would convey the magnitude of what she was living through, not in terms of battles and politicians, but by evoking the domestic lives and personal trials of the ordinary citizens of France. She did not live to see her ambition fulfilled, or to know that 65 years later, Suite Française would be published for the first time, and hailed as a masterpiece.

Best known for her posthumously published novel Suite française, Irène Némirovsky was born in Kiev in 1903. Her family fled the Russian Revolution for Paris, where she found fame as a novelist. But when the Nazis occupied France, she was arrested as a Jew and sent to Auschwitz, where she died aged just 39. This collection includes four of her best works, dramatised for radio with a full cast.

An old man looks back on a chequered life, concealing truths he will not reveal until the end. Fire in the Blood starts quietly, lyrically, but then races away with narrative twists and surprise revelations. A young man, newly married, is found drowned in the mill stream; an old man is more concerned about the repayment of a debt than with his young wife; a young woman asks Silvio to plead her case; no-one is quite as they seem.

Pierre and Agnès marry for love against the wishes of his parents and the family patriarch, the tyrannical industrialist Julien Hardelot, provoking a family feud which cascades down the generations. This is Balzac or The Forsyte Saga on a smaller, more intimate scale, the bourgeoisie observed close-up with Némirovsky's characteristically sly humour and clear-eyed compassion.

Nel 1929, il manoscritto fu presentato anonimo, e, letto dall’editore tutto d’un fiato, ne fu rintracciato l’autore, che sorprendentmente, si rivelò essere una giovane donna, elegante, figlia dell’alta borghesia russa rifugiatasi a Parigi dopo la rivoluzione. David Golder fu elogiato all’unanimità dalla critica, sia per il tema difficile che per la prosa pura e elegante. Il racconto è in gran parte narrato in prima persona da un terrorista che sta preparando un attentato al ministro della Pubblica Istruzione.

Antoinette Kampf ha quindici anni e una madre nevrotica e indifferente, preoccupata più di conquistarsi un posto nella società dorata della Parigi della Belle Époque - da vera parvenue - piuttosto che dei malesseri esistenziali della figlia adolescente. Antoinette vendicherà il suo amore filiale respinto con una decisione improvvisa e fatale. Un romanzo breve semplicemente perfetto!
