Audible Originals brings you a brand new audiobook adaptation of J. Sheridan Le Fanu’s classic gothic novella, Carmilla - starring Rose Leslie ( Game of Thrones and Downton Abbey), David Tennant ( Doctor Who and Broadchurch) and Phoebe Fox ( Life in Squares and The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death).

The moonlight spills like silver across ancient walls, and somewhere in the velvet darkness, a whisper stirs—a name, half-sighed, half-forgotten. Carmilla. A name as soft as a caress, as chilling as a shadow at the edge of the candle's glow. She does not knock at your door; she drifts through it like a dream. She is beauty wrapped in mystery, desire woven with dread. This is not a story of fangs bared in the night, nor of crude terrors lurking in the crypt. Carmilla is subtler, more intoxicating—a tale that shivers on the border between love and death, fascination and fear.

Love has many forms, many needs. Some fall into the dark, into the shadows. Forbidden love has connotations of desire, of possession but also of matters far more unsavoury. It’s a delicate facet of love that our classic authors explain with careful words and superbly crafted narratives.

Written by Irish master of the macabre Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, Carmilla is a chilling tale of mystery, seduction, and supernatural dread. When a mysterious young woman named Carmilla enters the secluded life of Laura and her father, strange illnesses and unsettling events begin to unfold. What follows is a slow-burning descent into fear, obsession, and dark revelation.

When a dreary and isolated country house opens its doors to an uninvited visitor, it admits a shadow that cannot be easily cast out. In master Gothic storyteller Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu's The Evil Guest, an atmosphere of quiet dread settles over the household long before violence shatters the silence. As a dark murder shakes the isolated estate, suspicion creeps into every corner, turning familiar faces into riddles and forcing the living to confront the deep, unquiet malice hidden within the human heart.

Step into the misty forests of Styria, where young Laura’s tranquil world is forever changed by the arrival of the enchanting and mysterious Carmilla. As you listen, you’ll sense the tension rise—the beauty of friendship twisting into something hauntingly deeper, the innocence of trust tainted by secrets that whisper in the night. You’ll feel every heartbeat, every shiver, every breath caught between fascination and terror.

Laura lives a lonely and melancholic life deep in the forest, where she and her ailing father reside in an otherwise empty castle. When, one night, Carmilla crashes her carriage into view nearby, Laura’s life changes rapidly into something feverish and erotic. The relationship that develops between the two women forms the blueprint for the lesbian vampire trope in all the stories that follow. But as Laura becomes plagued with nightmares and starts displaying strange symptoms, the truth about Carmilla—and its implications—come into the light.

The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown. These facts few psychologists will dispute, and their admitted truth must establish for all time the genuineness and dignity of the weirdly horrible tale as a literary form... As may naturally be expected of a form so closely connected with primal emotion, the horror-tale is as old as human thought and speech themselves.
