Esta novela de la narradora española Marisa D'Santos, de larga radicación en México, se desarrolla totalmente en una localidad de provincia, en España. El ámbito general de la guerra en España de los años 30 y la posterior dictadura franquista envuelven el destino de cada personaje en una especie de fatalismo que nos hace pensar en los extremos pasionales —vida, amor y muerte— de la tragedia clásica. El ámbito pueblerino se presenta con tal fidelidad a la propia invención de la autora, que adquiere valores plásticos, sonoros, sensoriales, táctiles, etc., en verdad incanjeables.
