The 17th-century devotional letters of Samuel Rutherford, most of which were written during imprisonment for the sake of the gospel, are presented for the edification of a new generation of listeners. Published more than 350 years ago, The Letters of Samuel Rutherford has been a source of encouragement and inspiration for Christians throughout the world.

Samuel Rutherford, born in the early 1600s, faced many hardships throughout his personal and spiritual life. Despite the criticism of his faith, imprisonment for advocacy of the church, and his exile from his beloved hometown, Rutherford was still able to inspire the people of Scotland with his preaching. Rutherford is still an inspiration in the world of Christianity today through the letters he wrote, some of which can be found in The Loveliness of Christ.

Samuel Rutherford (c. 1600 – 1661) was a Scottish Presbyterian pastor, theologian and author, and one of the Scottish Commissioners to the Westminster Assembly. Rutherford has been described as a "prince of letter writers" and was also known for devotional works like Christ Dying and Drawing Sinners to Himself which discusses the mercy of God.
