On Keeping the Heart is a sermon based on Proverbs 4:23, "Keep thy heart with all diligence for out of it are the issues of life." In this treatise, the author focuses on illuminating, healing, and guarding the heart.

Samuel Rutherford (c. 1600 – 1661) was a Scottish Presbyterian pastor, theologian and author, and one of the Scottish Commissioners to the Westminster Assembly. Rutherford has been described as a "prince of letter writers" and was also known for devotional works like Christ Dying and Drawing Sinners to Himself which discusses the mercy of God.

Benjamin B. Warfield (1851-1921) was Professor of Didactic and Polemic Theology at Princeton Theological Seminary. He discusses the human authorship of the scriptures and points out the divine authorship behind the human. It ascribes to the authors of the books the influence of the Holy Spirit in their process of writing that the words they set down become the words of God.
