William Wymark Jacobs (1863-1943) was an English author of short stories and novels, well known for his comedies involving rural Essex characters. His most famous story, "The Monkey's Paw" (1902) is a tale of intense psychological horror. "The Old Man of the Sea" is a farcical comedy about a young man, George Wright, who tries to win a lady’s hand by pretending to be the only heir of a rich uncle.

William Wymark Jacobs (1863 - 1943) was an English author of short stories and novels. His most popular works in the early part of the last century were his humorous tales set around the docks of Wapping and in the tap-room of the infamous Cauliflower tavern. Many of his stories were written in a Cockney vernacular and were keenly observant of character. His most famous horror stories are "The Monkey's Paw" and "His Brother's Keeper" both of which have been included in numerous anthologies.

When the White family come into the possession of a supposedly mystical talisman – a mummified monkey's paw – they are at first sceptical. According to the previous owner, the paw can grant three wishes, but only with a hellish cost. Mr. White, following encouragement from his son, flippantly wishes for £200, which will enable him to pay off the mortgage for his house. But when Mr. White's innocent wish comes true, a series of tragic and horrifying events ensue, changing the family forever.

Professor H. L. Sabsovich is recognized as one of the foremost figures in the field of Jewish social service. A great part of his active life was given to the work of the Baron de Hirsch Fund, and he distinguished himself as a visionary thinker as well as an excellent administrator and, significantly, the Builder of Woodbine, the Woodbine Agricultural School, and later as General Agent for the Baron de Hirsch Fund.
