This marvelous fantasy adventure tells of the triumph of the human spirit over the vile forces of fantastic creatures (dragons, griffins, basilisks, trolls, ogres, harpies). The story centers on the quest of two adolescents to gain the help of the unicorns against the forces of nasty creatures converging on the kingdom of Ethel. The unicorns refuse to help but the experience of the quest becomes the key that enables the humans to overcome their fear of the horrible creatures they must fight.

One of the most popular stories ever written, this allegory tells of Christian, an everyman character, who makes his way from the "City of Destruction" to the "Celestial City" of Zion. Christian finds himself weighed down by a great burden he carries from reading a book (obviously the Bible). This burden, which could cause him to sink into hell (Tophet), is Christian's acute, immediate concern, and impels him to a crisis: what to do for deliverance.

This collection of 35 short poems was first published in 1927, and is a sequel to When We Were Very Young, which was the first anthology of verse dealing with the domestic adventures of Christopher Robin and Winnie the Pooh.
