こどもが欲しいと願う夫婦に、望みが叶ってついに新しい命が宿りました。しかし、恐ろしい魔女との間に交わした約束により、その子は連れて行かれ、ラプンツェルと名づけられて塔の中に閉籠められてしまいます。美しいむすめとなったラプンツェルは、黄金を伸ばしたような、長い、美くしい、頭髪を持っていました。魔女が塔の中に入ろうと思うときには、「ラプンツェルや!ラプンツェルや!お前の頭髪(かみ)を下げておくれ!」 と言うと、ラプンツェルはその髪を下に垂らし、魔女はそれを登っていきます。降りることも出来ない塔の中で、魔女によって育てられたラプンツェルは、外の世界を知ることもなく、ただひとり、塔の中で歌う日々を送っていましたが、ある日、国の王子がやってきて、ラプンツェルの前にあらわれました。ふたりは次第に心を惹かれあっていきましたが、ふたりがひそかに会っていることを知った魔女は、ふたりを引き離してしまいました。
