小兎は死んだのかと思いきや、ある日二匹の小さい兎が穴から出てくる。
そのうちに親兎も小兎も姿を見せなくなった。ある時、三太夫は壁の隅に別の穴を見つける。
元の穴を見ると大きな爪跡があり、掘り返してみたが兎は出てこない。
猫に食われたか？別の巣穴を掘り返すと二匹の親兎とさらに小さな七匹の小兎がいた。
しかし、あの二匹の小兎はいなかった。
