「寛容」は、英領下にあるインド人が、自らの日本観を新たにする経緯を書く。インド独立を夢見るドミイは、日本で商い、家庭を構え、根付きながらも「笑ふ人種」の日本人を軽んじている。「不良英人」として国外退去処分になっても、さしたるショックはなかった。
しかし、日中戦争の勃発を機にドミイは、日本人がいざとなればひどく勇猛であること、自分の侮ってきた日本人の甘さが、実は日本の「寛容」であったことを知る。
表紙絵の人物はおそらくドミイなのだろう。当時イメージされた「南」の人の典型的な表象だ。ドミイは初め着物を嫌っていた。しかし「日本が恋しくて堪らな」くなった彼は、身の丈に合わない着物をまとい、日の丸を手にする。
