長い間病気で臥していた太郎は、ようやく床から出られるようになりました。日の出ている間だけ外に出ることができた太郎が外に出てみると、どこにも友だちの姿がありませんでした。ひとりしょんぼりとしていると、往来の上からひとりの少年がふたつの金の輪をまわしながら走ってきました。美しく光る金の輪をまわす少年は、太郎に向かって微笑んで、往来の向こうへ消えていきました。次の日に太郎が同じ時刻に外に出てみると、再びその少年に出会いました。そしてまた太郎に向かって微笑みかけて、消えていきました。その晩、太郎は夢を見ました。太郎は、その少年から金の輪をひとつ分けてもらって、どこまでも走って行って、赤い夕やけの中にとけていきました。
