本作作者菊池寛は、小説家で、劇作家で、ジャーナリスト、東京市会議だったり、大映の社長だったり。文藝春秋社つくって、芥川賞・直木賞も創立した。日本麻雀連盟初総裁をつとめ、競馬に入れ込み馬主にもなり、将棋も嗜み「人生は一局の将棋なり 指し直す能わず」と嘯いている。
頭の回転早くお茶目でいたずら好きで屈託なくむとんちゃく、大人になっても泥まみれで遊んでいる子供のような彼は、ねらいたがわず合戦とか武将も大好きで、ウンチクたれてるだけでは飽き足らず本作を上梓した。
秀吉の天下統一の最終段階。関東を束ねていて、信玄、謙信でも落とせなかった北条家、小田原城を武力ではなく財力によって落とした戦いである。この戦より武将による合戦より補給が戦の分け目を反映する戦に変化していく。近現代の戦争に通じる合戦であった。
