一七歳、秋のはじめ―― 部屋は四畳、明窓の障子の向こうには二畳ばかりの池がある。何百年もの古邸であるから、鼠だらけ、埃だらけ、草だらけ。塾生と教師家族が住んでいる。その夜は、塾で禁止されている小説をひっそりと読んでいた。すると、障子の向こうでぱらぱら…と音がした。耳を澄ますと、連続した調子で、ぱらぱら… 四五日後、風の黄昏時。家内には他に誰もいなかった。惡寒のために床に就いていると、枕元でばたばた…と音がする。頭を上げたが、誰が来たのでもなかった。しばらくするとふたたび、しとしと…しとしと… 堪えられずに起き上がり、次の間、広間へと出た。ほっと息をつき振り返ると、部屋の敷居をまたいで、薄紅のぼやけた絹に搦まって、蒼白い女の脚ばかりが歩行いて来た。
