薫 二四歳

心をば火の思ひもて焼かましと
願ひき身をば煙にぞする

八の宮の一周忌を迎えるころ、薫は大君に自分の思いを訴えるが、大君は中の君と薫の結婚を望んでいた。
弁を介して大君の寝所に忍んだ薫だが、気配を察した大君は立ち去り、薫は残された中の君と語り合いながら一夜を過ごすのであった。
大君をなびかせたい薫は計をめぐらせて匂宮と中の君を結婚させてしまう。
しかし匂宮は身分柄なかなか宇治を訪れることができず、その上、夕霧の娘六の君（ろくのきみ）との縁談が決まり、宇治の姫君たちの煩悶は深まる。
大君は心労もたたって病に伏すようになる。十一月に宇治へ見舞いに訪れた薫は大君の容体に驚き、献身的に看病するが、大君は息を引きとる。薫の悲しみは限りない。中の君は姉を煩悶させた匂宮を恨めしく思う。匂宮は中の君を京へ迎える決心をする。
