しめやかにこころの濡れぬ川霧の 立ちまふ家はあはれなるかな

そのころ宇治の山荘に八の宮（はちのみや）という親王がいた。光源氏の弟で高貴な身分であったが、政権が移って無勢力となり、零落の運命をたどっていた。妻を亡くし、残された二人の姫君を養育している八の宮は、在俗のまま深く仏道に帰依していた。
その噂を聞いた薫（かおる）は八の宮を慕い、宇治に通うようになる。
ある秋、薫は二人の姫君が琵琶と琴を合奏している姿をかいま見て、心を動かされる。応対した大君（おおいきみ）に心惹かれる薫だが、代わりに出てきた老女房の弁（べん）がかつて柏木に仕えていた者だと知る。薫は弁から自分の出生の秘密を聞き、大きな衝撃を受ける。しかし、母女三の宮（にょさんのみや）が無邪気に経を読んでいる姿を見て、自分が真実を知ったことを胸の内に納めるのだった。
