柏木は自らの死を覚悟しながらも、女三の宮への執着を捨てることができず、心の内を綴った手紙を小侍従（こじじゅう）に託して、女三の宮に送るのだった。
女三の宮は男児（のちの薫）を出産する。周囲が歓喜するなか、真実を知る光源氏の胸中は複雑である。女三の宮は衰弱と絶望のなか、ひそかに訪れた父朱雀院に懇願し、にわかに出家して尼になってしまう。
重篤に陥った柏木は、見舞いに来た夕霧に、自らの罪をそれとなくほのめかし、源氏への謝罪を頼むのだった。
その後、柏木は亡くなった。夕霧は、残された柏木の妻女二の宮を見舞い、故人をしのんだ。
源氏も柏木の死をはかなみ、かわいいさかりの薫（かおる）をいとしく思うのだった。
