たちまちに知らぬ花さくおぼつかな
天よりこしをうたがはねども

朱雀院は病気をわずらい出家を考えていたが、残される娘の女三の宮（にょさんのみや）のことが気がかりであった。女三の宮にふさわしい縁組を考える朱雀院は思い悩んだ末、光源氏に託すのがよいと結論づけた。源氏は承諾しかねていたが、生来の好奇心が働き、女三の宮との縁組に応じてしまう。女三の宮の幼さに落胆した源氏は、紫の上のすばらしさを改めて認識するが、そのころ朧月夜（おぼろづきよ）とも再び関係を結ぶ。紫の上の苦悩は深まるばかりであった。
夕霧の友人柏木（かしわぎ）はいまだに女三の宮に恋慕していた。六条院で蹴鞠をしている折、女三の宮の飼っている猫の紐が引っかかって御簾が上がり、柏木は女三の宮の姿をしかと見てしまう。柏木はますます女三の宮への思いを募らせるのであった。
