大きなるまゆみのもとに美しく
かがり火もえて涼風ぞ吹く

光源氏は近江の君のことを、内大臣が深く考えもせずに呼び寄せ、気に入らなかったためにぞんざいな扱いを受けていると気の毒に思っていた。
玉鬘は実の子が必ずしもよい扱いを受けるのではないことを知り、迷惑な恋心をもたれているとはいえ、源氏に引き取られたことを幸運に思い、源氏に信頼を置くのであった。 玉鬘をよく訪ね、そこで長い時間を過ごすようになっていた源氏は、帰りがたい思いで、消えかかっていた庭の篝火をさらに燃やさせた。美しく照らし出された玉鬘にみずからの恋情を歌に詠んだ源氏はようやく退出しようとするが、そのとき、近くで楽を奏でている夕霧（ゆうぎり）たちに気づき、彼らを呼び寄せる。そして、三人の公達たちとともに合奏を始めるのだった。玉鬘はその音をしみじみと聞いた。
