けざやかにめでたき人ぞ在(い)ましたる
野分(のわき)が開(あ)くる絵巻のおくに

風流な秋の景色が広がる六条院に、野分（台風）の来る気配が高まっていた。心配になり秋の草木を縁先でながめていた紫の上はたまたま訪れていた夕霧にその姿を見られてしまう。夕霧は紫の上の格別な美しさに心を打たれ、その面影を忘れることができなくなる。 光源氏は夕霧を伴い、女性たちのところへそれぞれ野分の見舞いに行く。玉鬘を訪れた際、源氏と玉鬘が親しげにしている様子をひそかに見た夕霧は二人の関係に不審を抱くのだった。
さらに夕霧は妹明石の姫君（あかしのひめぎみ）を見舞う。美しく成長している明石の姫君を見た夕霧は、紫の上や玉鬘といった女性たちを思い出し、それぞれが花のようだと感慨にふける。
一方、大宮（おおみや）を見舞う内大臣は雲居雁と夕霧の仲を認める気配はなく、近江の君の不満をもらしていた。
