光源氏 五一歳

なほ春のましろき花と見ゆれども
ともに死ぬまで悲しかりけり

紫の上は大病以後、体調がすぐれないままでいた。出家を望むが光源氏は決してそれを許さない。
紫の上が発願した法華経の供養が盛大に行われた。死期を悟る紫の上は、花散里（はなちるさと）や明石の君（あかしのきみ）と歌を交わし、それとなく別れを告げるのだった。夏になり、紫の上の衰弱はさらに進んだ。紫の上は、見舞いに訪れた明石の姫君にもさりげなく遺言し、幼い孫たちの成長が見られないことを嘆き悲しむのであった。
その秋、紫の上は、光源氏と明石の姫君が見守る中、ついに息を引き取る。
源氏の悲しみは限りない。紫の上の美しい死顔を見た夕霧も悲嘆にくれる。葬送の儀がなされ、誰もが紫の上の死を深く悲しんだ。源氏は出家を志すが、紫の上の死を契機としてはならないと、かろうじて思いとどまるのだった。
