＜あらすじ＞
功刀功兵衛は御用金を使ってひそかに金貸しをしていた苅田壮平を追及し、怒り心頭だった。貧しい侍たちを獲物にしたばかりか、花街の馴染みの女を通して娼婦たちにまで高利貸しを行って苅田のことは、藩でも大ごとになるため、功兵衛は城代家老に報告する前に、世話になっている次席家老の越川斎宮に相談を持ち掛けていた。
そんな中、功兵衛だけを狙って物乞いにくる老乞食がいた。自分だけに物乞いをする乞食を誰何すると、さくらと名乗った。
八年前に功兵衛の妻であったさくらは家来と出奔し、世間体を恐れた功兵衛は病死と届け出て、葬式まで行った過去があった。
現在の妻ふじが身ごもった時分に、自身のことをゆすりに来たさくらのことを恐れた功兵衛は苦悩するが、それと同時に正面からぶつかって確かめなければならないと腹を決めた。
そして、さくらに身支度を整えさせ、さのやという料亭で功兵衛は再び彼女と対面するのだが……。
