＜あらすじ＞
六軒長屋の家主である禿こと縄屋吾助は、徳川八代将軍吉宗の時代に起こった「天一坊事件」に非常なる衝撃と示唆を受ける。自分自身も名門の血を引いているのではないかと思った吾助は、系図書き人に報酬を渡し系図を書かせたことによって、自分は謡曲「鉢の木」で知られる佐野源左衛門常世の後裔であると信じ込んでしまう。同じように六軒長屋にも大名のご落胤か何かがいるのではないかと思った吾助は、住人たちの迷惑を顧みず、身許調査をはじめる。吾助の世迷い言を煩わしく思った駕籠舁きの金太・銀太は、長屋の他の住人たちと協力し、乞食の若者を大名のご落胤に仕立て上げるのだった。
六軒長屋だけではなく、領主までも巻き込んだドタバタ喜劇話。
