  • Summary

  • As a child, Chris Hooper dreamed of monsters. But in deep space, he found only darkness and isolation. Then, on planet LV178, he and his fellow miners discovered a storm-scoured, sand-blasted hell - and trimonite, the hardest material known to man.

When a shuttle crashes into the mining ship Marion, the miners learn that there was more than trimonite deep in the caverns. There was evil, hibernating and waiting for suitable prey. Hoop and his associates uncover a nest of Xenomorphs, and hell takes on a new meaning. Quickly they discover that their only hope lies with the unlikeliest of saviors....

....Ellen Ripley, the last human survivor of the salvage ship Nostromo.

Ripley’s shuttle has docked with the Marion. She arrives traumatised, only to find her rescuers under attack by a familiar foe. To make matters worse, it seems that Ash, an android she’d thought killed aboard the Nostromo, has uploaded his AI routines into her shuttle’s computer.

excellent, cannot praise enough

i listened to the alien trilogy (out of the shadows, river of pain, sea of sorrows) in the wrong order. i listened to river of pain first, out of the shadows second and i am currently going through sea of sorrows. out of the shadows is by far the best of the three - and that's a pretty strong statement given how good the other two are. the writing is just so perfect, the voice acting of the cast could literally not get any better. rutger hauer was an absolute pleasure to listen to - though the entire cast really did do an amazing job.

i fell so in love with the crew, i really was dreading the end of the the story because (possible spoiler) due to my jumbled listening order i knew that river of pain was another chapter in the universe through new eyes. would recommend this to anyone who has even just a vague idea of the alien universe. the sound design, the soundtrack - all the technical stuff - was mind blowing.

Perhaps the best alien audio adaptation yet.

For those who’ve been disappointed with alien 3 and it’s sequels, I think alien out of shadows is a welcome return to the alien universe. It’s well plotted perhaps not up to the standard of Alien but that was not only ground breaking but it’s pure visceral impact has yet to be matched. Voice acting is better than good as well as sounds effects. The actress playing Ripley inhabits her persona well and her voice sounds like sigourney weaver. And the antagonist is introduced a little too early. A more than worthy listen.

Ripley's Believe it or not

The novel was a welcome addition to the Alien franchise but Ripley's presence was odd and unnecessary. The author made a good attempt at salvaging a need for her presence between the first and second films but still, the conflict in the Alien universe remains the same, the real threat are the synthetics and Weyland-Yutani; the Aliens are only the weapon used by these nefarious wielders.

Good, compelling, but I found myself wishing...

... that this was the Alien story that William Gibson wrote. Trying to communicate a historically visual story world is tricky as an audio drama, understandably. Much description of protocol and procedure become necessary—for the plot, blocking, mapping to all make sense. Few can do—describe, thematize—such things as Gibson can, to say nothing of what he can do with “problematic” artificial intelligences.

Tremendous

Great story, wonderfully performed! I could have sworn it was Sigourney Weaver reprising her role as Ripley, excellent voice acting! LeChance was so good as well!

BRILLIANT. JUST BRILLIANT

This production was so brilliant. Got sucked in and fell in love with the crew. Wanted them all to make it even though was fully aware that wasn't going to happen.

If you're an Alien fan then this is a must.

Good

I listened to the audiobook version with this cast first and I do prefer that format over the podcast format but that's simply because I prefer continuous uninterrupted play. The content and narration quality was the same as the audiobook version.
Action packed, twisted and thrilling. Great characters, wonderful performances by all the narrators. The cast of narrators made the intensity of the plot absolutely riveting. I would recommend this.

Excellent story!

For a while I wondered if this was a "what if" story and it sort of is but the author did a great job smoothing out the ending. I love how Rutger Hauer pronounces re-port-ing. And the actress who voices Ripley is so good I really thought it was Sigourney Weaver at times. Great story. I'm glad I listened.

Fantastic!

This book is the perfect follow-up the original movie. The performances are outstanding, the story is legitimately tense, the new crew are just as endearing as the original, and the situation is even more dire. I enjoyed this from start to finish!

Loved this story!

I love audio dramas, and this was an especially great one! The tension and emotion was conveyed so perfectly, allowing us to be immersed in the scenes despite not being able to see them. I really loved the characters both new and old. I cried so bad at that ending.

Super-charged Alien Creepiness!

Deliciously creepy tension and fast paced action, this was a blast! From the opening scenes through to the end this smashes through the storyline at a remarkable rate. The high quality cast and excellent production values make this an absolute joy to listen to. Eerie and solid sound effects genuinely do add to the unfolding drama, even the cat gets some lines!

Some will find problems with the fact that this deviates from the known Alien story that went before it but I think this does a good enough job to bend things the amount it does and indeed it does just bend things rather than break them. It’s a fine audio drama and while probably nothing could quite match the tension of the films this does a great job of evoking similar feelings of dread and panic. There are some clever story telling techniques including the “software interloper” whose identity I will not reveal as I don’t do spoilers!

In all this is a fine drama, if I have a complaint it’s that it simply wasn’t long enough!! I am sure I could have listened to this kind of action for several more hours! And I am delighted that after my previous experience with Audible Studios which was the awful Starling Project this is the best one that I have heard from them yet. The investment in the production values and the high quality cast has more than paid dividends!

Bravo!

A long time Alien fan's opinion

I was sceptical of this at first, but let me tell you that this was one of the best stories I've read/heard in recent memory that's set in the Alien universe.

After trying to wash the sour taste of Covenant from my mouth (yes even after years), this was probably the best thing that I could have found.

Lots of tension, the characters are multidimensional, the setting is intriguing and the story is surprising well written.

If you're an Alien fan, then there is no reason to not have a listen!

Gripping

I remember watching the film Alien, many years ago, so the thought of a freebie in the same genre appealed to me. This turned out to be one of the best things Ive listened to in ages.
The storyline plays along the similar Alien theme of picking off crew members one by one, but the plot kept me listening and gripped throughout the entire series.
Well worth a listen.

An audio movie

This could only be described as an audio film. Rather the usual audio book with a nice voice reading it, this has actors playing all characters with cool sound effects. Im visually impaired and this book was better than most films.

Thought I knew the story - I didn't

Not the script of the film and well characterised. Rutger is a big name for a relatively small part. Ripley well acted.

listened to chapters in isolation to start then book gathers pace, last four chapters listened en bloc.

No complaints except the episodes didn't follow on automatically which was a pain - especially if listening on an echo device - since Alexa didn't seem to recognise the book.

Action packed with a slightly silly resolution

Enjoyed the story throughout, although the whole time I wondered how the author would bridge the story with the canonical beginning of Aliens. The only possible way seemed fantastically silly...and indeed it was.

The performance and production is fantastic, and it was definitely worth the time to listen.

Gripping and intriguing

I have enjoyed this book so much. I was so surprised and pleased with how Laurel Lefkow sounded so similar to Sigourney Weaver because it was this similarity that made the whole listening experience even more gripping.
I highly recommend this book and to make it even better, it was FREE!

Aliens 0.5

A great "prequel" story to James Cameron's Aliens, that is performed by talented actors and wrapped in a delicious package of sound fx. All we need now is a deck of cards.

This Audio drama is worth every credit. If you're a fan of the Alien franchise, you will enjoy this piece.

Comfortably fitting in between Alien and Aliens, you'll be engaged throughout the whole tale. The voice actor for Ellen Ripley is spot on too!

Treat yourself.

I admire it's purity

As a big fan of the first 3 films I'd say that this is one of the better examples of a well executed expansion in the Alien universe.
While the story itself was decent it was the great perfomances that made it shine.

Enjoyable radiodrama. I liked the way they didn't disrupt the lore of the movies while still providing an interesting adventure.
