大正から昭和期の作家、梶井基次郎の小説。初出は「詩・現實」［1930（昭和5）年］。結核の療養をかねて静岡県湯ヶ島温泉に1年4ヶ月滞在したときのことを書いた。下流の旅館から上流の自分の旅館へ帰る道筋の闇の風景を書いたもの。闇の中でうごめくものは、実態だけとは限らず、“私”の意識の中にもある。読者は、それに引きずり込まれながら、読後は、不思議な清清しさがある作品。
