Die Klaviersonate war nach dem Höhepunkt der Wiener Klassik aus der Mode gekommen. Beethoven führte die Gattung zunächst gemeinsam mit Haydn und Mozart zum Höhepunkt; er war es aber auch, der sie ab 1818 immer weiter aus ihrer traditionellen Form herausgerissen hat. Einen neuen Anstoß, wie es in dieser Situation weitergehen könnte, schuf der junge Franz Schubert 1822 in seiner Wandererfantasie. Sie wurde noch dreißig Jahre später für Franz Liszt zu einem wichtigen Ausgangspunkt für seine Klaviersonate in h-Moll (1853). Dr. Stefan Schaub zeigt, was es auf sich hat mit Schuberts Idee - und welche Freude es bereitet, das bei Schubert beobachtete Modell in Franz Liszts Werk wiederzuerkennen und weiterentwickelt zu sehen. Dadurch entdeckt der Hörer beide Werke völlig neu!
