Publisher's Summary
Late at night, Kumarasurar’sphone rings shrilly. His teenage son is calling. What could he want?
A seemingly simple demand torments Kumarasurar, who fears it might put his finances - and perhaps his son’s life - in jeopardy. As a father’s anxieties unravel, his memories undermine his self-worth, and imaginary scenes of damnation taunt him.
Estuary brings alive the different ways - absurd and endearing by turns - in which a man and his young son navigate the contemporary world. In the process, it peels back the layers of Kumarasurar’s loneliness: the hurt of a married man whose wife cares only for the happiness of their child, the endless monotony of an office job, and the struggle of the salaried middle class to give their children the best chance of success.
Perumal Murugan’s latest novel, his first in an urban setting, is also a razor-sharp parody of everything from e-commerce to the fitness industry, art appreciation to political manipulation, cram schools to social networks. Through a meditative exploration of a father’s emotional landscape, Murugan tells of a world wrecked by unchecked consumerism and an obsession with growth, where technology overrides common sense and degrees don’t guarantee education. And, with characteristic tenderness, he also weaves in a way to redemption.

Unique setting, riveting Style, great performance
I'm unable to decide how much I like this book. It's got a riveting style for sure. Characters and relationships are portrayed with a wonderful nuance. The writer commits to his intentions of keeping fiction a fiction, and that adds quite a quirk to the whole thing. The translation seems very well done, and Suki's performance of the text is brilliant too.
Parts of the book could be much crisper, but the author declares his intentions of not editing himself right in the foreword so I was willing to go with that. What left me wanting, however, was the ending. It does reach a kind of crescendo, but not quite; making the resolution seem rather hurried, almost convenient.

Such a refreshing listen
The story really get us into the nook and crannies of a normal middle class family. The book effortlessly mirrors the modern time and the people dealing with it differently. The author has done a terrific job here. The translator and the narrator has made it more better by giving their valuable contribution. Must listen.

the narrator was amateurish
I don't know why they chose a female narrator for a male author, and She is narrating the book as if it's a bedtime story for kids, over enthusiastic very dramatic at places which are mostly normal situations. disappointed with the narrator but love the book.

Another of Perumal's masterpiece
This was my second book of Perumal after Poonachi. I like the style of the book is very much as the author promised, with the bare story with none of the trying to express the perception of the characters. It reminded me of the style of Albert Camus and Hemingway. It is precise, to the point with little bezels all around.
The book stretched a little towards the end, but it had all the power of keeping your focus down to the last words and making you feel all the feelings of the characters. Overall a good read and quite relatable to the contemporary Indian society.

Good parody of our rat race
I was amused by this storyline and the plot buildup. Murugan has done a great job describing the foolishness of the common man. I loved to part describing the process of the Great Indian Education Institutes and what they do to our students. I loved that how this was such an awesome parody of our educational offerings and how parents navigate through to give the best to their children. This is also an awesome read to probably look within that how we manifest our limited viewpoints on the whole world and call everyone else wrong. This in turns may end up affecting our mental health a lot more than we can imagine. The last few chapters were very different from the whole flow of the book, and thats where the title comes from probably. Overall another amazing story (my third from Murugan) and I am not at all disappointed.
