春の花見に対して、一般に、紅葉を観賞することを「紅葉狩り」と呼びます。紅葉を愛でる様子を、獲物を追う「狩猟」になぞらえた古くからの表現です。
紅葉狩りは平安貴族の遊びとして始まり、江戸時代には庶民の間に広まりました。現在のように、紅葉の名所を訪れるために旅行をする人が増えたのは、明治時代です。
紅葉の時期は、各地の名所で紅葉祭りが行われ、有名寺社の中には、紅葉シーズンに合わせて庭園や寺宝の公開などを行うところもあります。
