Nohgaku is a Japanese traditional art that has been practiced since the Muromachi period — more than 600 years.
能楽は、室町時代から600年以上にわたって演じられている日本の伝統芸能。ユネスコの無形文化遺産にも登録されています。
能楽には、能と狂言があります。日本には奈良時代から猿楽と呼ばれる芸能がありましたが、能も狂言も、この猿楽から発展したものです。
能は、能面と呼ばれる面を使用し、能舞台で「シテ」と呼ばれる演者が主役を演じます。簡単にいえば古典舞台劇で、演じられるのは、主に神話や歴史物語を題材にした悲劇です。
一方の狂言は、一般庶民の日常生活を、おもしろおかしく表現するお笑い劇。役者も、能面を着けずに演じるのが一般的です。
能と狂言は基本的に、同じ能舞台で、交互に演じられます。
