1934. Nan Cuz war sieben, als sich ihr Leben auf einmal völlig veränderte. Eine große deutsche Frau erschien in ihrem Indianerdorf und nahm sie aus dem Dschungel Guatemalas mit nach Europa, in die damalige Reichshauptstadt Berlin. Nan heißt jetzt Irmgard und muss auf einmal Schuhe tragen. Ein "richtiges deutsches Mädel" will sie werden, doch Maya-Indianer gelten im Dritten Reich als vermeintlicher verlorener Stamm Israels. Nan wird zu einer Beobachterin von außen, beginnt zu malen.
Das Bild "Die Madonna von Guatemala" macht sie in den 50er Jahren in Deutschland berühmt; "Im Reiche des Meskal" wird zum Kultbuch der 68er. Es folgen Ausstellungen in Hamburg, in Paris, in ganz Europa. Trotz ihrer ungewöhnlichen Lebensgeschichte gelingt es Nan Cuz in ihrem Leben einen Halt zu finden, sich eine ganz eigene Identität aufzubauen. Sie wird zu einer Gewinnerin, die ihre Stärke genau daraus zieht, eine Grenzgängerin zwischen den Kulturen zu sein.
