When Emira is apprehended at a supermarket for ‘kidnapping’ the white child she’s actually babysitting, it sets off an explosive chain of events. Her employer Alix, a feminist blogger with the best of intentions, resolves to make things right. But Emira herself is aimless, broke and wary of Alix’s desire to help. When a surprising connection emerges between the two women, it sends them on a crash course that will upend everything they think they know – about themselves, each other and the messy dynamics of privilege.

Until the day it is all put in jeopardy by a single, brutal act. It divides the town into those who think it should be hushed up and forgotten, and those who'll risk the future to see justice done.

It is the summer of 1940. Nineteen-year-old Vivian Morris arrives in New York with her suitcase and sewing machine, exiled by her despairing parents. Story
Connell and Marianne grow up in the same small town in rural Ireland. The similarities end there; they are from very different worlds. When they both earn places at Trinity College in Dublin, a connection that has grown between them lasts long into the following years. This is an exquisite love story about how a person can change another person's life - a simple yet profound realisation that unfolds beautifully over the course of the novel. It tells us how difficult it is to talk about how we feel and it tells us - blazingly - about cycles of domination, legitimacy and privilege.

Story
Is it possible to write a sidesplitting novel about the breakup of the perfect marriage? If the writer is Nora Ephron, the answer is a resounding yes. For in this inspired confection of adultery, revenge, group therapy, and pot roast, the creator of Sleepless in Seattle reminds us that comedy depends on anguish as surely as a proper gravy depends on flour and butter.

Jojo Moyes - Though I have seen her books in many best sellers list I never tried her books as her genre is romance which I have outgrown .... presumably......But I liked the gist of Giver of stars ....a historical fiction one of my favourite. And I found that she is an amazing story teller.
And her work is ever more enhanced by the narrator Julia Whelan ..... really awesome narration by Julia. Totally a very enjoyable read .

An interesting read with a few great characters!
A nice journey into the 1938 Kentucky. But I felt the book could have touched upon the depression and other social aspects of life in a bit more depth. Nonetheless, the narrative is pretty vivid for the reader to picturize the life of the characters involved. And as usual, Julia Whelan is awesome in her narration on audible.

Amazing Book and Fantasic Narration
“There is always a way out of a situation. Might be ugly. Might leave you feeling like the earth had gone and shifted under your feet. But there is always a way around.”
~Jojo Moyes, The Giver of Stars
EVERYBODY STOP WHATEVER YOU’RE DOING AND BUY THIS BOOK!! I promise you won’t regret it. The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes is the unforgettable story of a group of women that become the Packhorse Librarians of Kentucky. The women are all vastly different, but the way they come together to protect each other and serve their community is incredible.
As you can probably tell, I LOVED this story. Absolutely loved it. I was immediately drawn into the beautiful descriptions of the Kentucky mountains, and by each unique character fighting to break free of the traditional expectations set upon women and create a life for themselves. I loved the lengths with which they would go to deliver books to their community, and the incredible life-changing impact that we all know that books have. The story primarily revolves around Alice, a British women brought to Kentucky by her new husband who quickly discovers the marriage to not be all she thought it would be; and Margery, a bit of an outcast from town, but the feisty leader of the Packhorse Librarians, and a women not afraid to live by her own rules. Together Margery and Alice discover what it means to truly fight for the life you want to live, and how far the bonds of friendship can sustain us.
I loved all the beautiful romances throughout the story, and the ways that each relationship developed. The second half of the book completely took me by surprise with the new plot lines that were introduced, and by the end I found myself crying with a smile on my face. That ending was SO moving. I wish this review could truly do justice to this incredible story, but I honestly can’t. The Giver of Stars quickly became one of my favorite reads of the year, and one of my favorite stories of all time. I HIGHLY recommend that everyone read or listen to it. (The audio-book is PHENOMENAL by the way...I mean, it’s Julia Whelan...need I say more?!)

Worth the effort to get to know the characters
I so enjoyed this book. I’m not a fan of cheesy story lines, too predictable outcomes, ‘standard’ character types and this perhaps ventured into these areas a couple of times. But I found myself wanting to go back to my phone over and over to listen to the story to see what happened next.

Narrator doesn't do it justice
This is a gripping story which is quite different to the books I usually read.
I enjoyed the story but the narrator didn't do it justice, in my opinion.
There are a number of songs in the story and the narrator chose to read the lyrics rather than sing them. It meant the impact of the songs is lost from the scene.
Also couldn't always differentiate the male voices so had to rewind and check who was speaking.

Magnificent story with spellbinding narrator
You know you've thoroughly enjoyed an audio-book when you want to listen to it all over again straight away. Every moment of this audio-book is a joy. What a triumph of a story. So interesting and all the characters are fantastically portrayed in words and voice. I highly recommend it!

A real surprise.
I had bought this audio book without reading the write up as I loved Me before you and the rest. So when it begins, set in the early 20th century ( read in with an American accent no less ) I was perturbed.
“Oh well, I’ve bought it now- May as well hear it out” I thought......
20 minutes later and I was hooked. The warmth of the women, the unlikely friendships that develop and the vivid painting of mountains- it carried me away to a time and place I didn’t want to leave.
I genuinely loved this book and the fact it’s based around a true story made me love it even more.

A ‘shelf’ favourite - absolutely beautiful
To say I loved this book is an understatement! It was such a gorgeous story of beautiful women and friendship! I have always loved Jojo’s work and this did not disappoint!
With any audiobook the narrator is a hit or miss for me and Julia narrated this book with the love it deserved!

So Great!
This book is so good, I just had to write my first ever review. I loved the plot, all the characters and it is beautifully performed. I have never read Jojo Moyes and will certainly be reading more. Now I want to go to the Kentucky Mountains.

Everything You Need
I am rather partial to historical fiction & I loved this book from start to finish, actually I didn't want it to finish at all. The interaction between the ladies was what we all hope for in relationships with women. I was interested to learn of the Packhorse Library Julia Whelan is sooo easy to listen to. 5 Star listening. So descriptive & easy to form imagination of the time, people & events.

Thank you to the other reviewers!
Like another reviewer I don't like the sound of American fiction narrators but after reading other reviews I found myself totally agreeing - I really enjoyed the narrative and found the performance really engaging. Story weakened towards the end but it was still a lovely form of escapism, a beautiful setting and a wonderful group of Librarians.
