Publisher's Summary
This was meant to be the perfect trip. The northern lights. A press launch on a luxury cruise ship. A chance for travel journalist Lo Blackwood to recover from a traumatic break-in that has left her on the verge of collapse and to work out what she wants from her relationship.
Except things don't go as planned. Woken in the night by screams, Lo rushes to her window to see a body thrown overboard from the next-door cabin. But the records show that no one ever checked in to that cabin, and no passengers are missing from the boat.
Exhausted, emotional and increasingly desperate, Lo has to face the fact that her sleep problems might be driving her mad, or she is trapped on a boat with a murderer - and she is the sole witness....

Not for me
I wanted to love this but I found it hard to listen to. I loved Gone Girl and Girl on the Train but this just seemed off to me. I didn't find any of it realistic including simple dialogue. There were a few twists but a lot of it was obvious and you just had to wait for the narrator to figure it out. I am surprised it has such high ratings.

Keeps you guessing
It was a good mystery, I found it impossible to guess what would happen next or predict any of the plot twists; lots of suspense to keep you hooked!
At first it had a somewhat of an Agatha Christie Murder Mystery feel, a closed environment with a fixed list of suspects, but with a faster moving plot.
Most of the story takes place on the boat, and just when you think you know what’s happening, you get a snippet of what’s going on “off the boat, back home” and any conclusions you may have reached are dashed.
How long until they make a movie?

Seriousness Gone
While reading the book written by Ruth Ware was exciting and thrilling. I searched for the Audio Book for my girlfriend to listen to this incredible book that I read. The narrator takes long pauses which make it slow and her “male” voices are just completely awful. Every male character sounds the same and sounds like a female mocking a male. Just completely offsetting that takes the seriousness of the storyline.

Awful
Tedious and unconvincing. Reader mispronounces words in her slapdash drive to the end (although I couldn't stand it and gave up after four chapters.) Story is flat and pedestrian. This book is another triumph for the publisher's marketing department - shame on you, it's absolute rubbish

Just. Too. Melodramatic!!
I've never read Ruth Ware before, I didn't know what to expect, but this novel was just too melodramatic for my taste, like a 21st century Barbara Cartland!
Perhaps I'm over reacting to the character's reaction to being burgled, but it puts the story on an uncomfortable edge which borders on irritating and over the top imaginings! So I'm probably just intolerant of the whole thing or just unsympathetic. Either way, I found it very difficult to continue to care about what happens to her. So, I gave up the struggle.
Listen to the sample - the entire book seems to be like that, before you even arrive at the story! Not my cup of tea!

In the end ok but 1st half a drag
In the end the book was ok but especially the first half of the book was nearly boring. The main character's neurotic behaviour was irritating and made the book boring. If this had been paper copy not audiobook I would have skipped the middle part and just read the last 20 pages.

Don't bother
I had pretty high hopes for this book, audible seem to be pushing it quite a lot but I found it very frustrating. The main character is so pathetic I ended up willing her not to get out of trouble! If I heard the sentence "I was soooo tired" one more time I though I might scream.
I did get to the end, pulled through by the great performance of the narrator, but it was not a brilliant listen at all.

Another good listen from this author that I couldn't switch off.
This is the second book from Ruth Ware that I have listened to and again, I was surprised at how the slightly broken heroine somehow didn't annoy me and instead I found myself relating to her. I think this is partly due to good writing but also helped by an excellent narrator whose voice manages to relay the internal conflict of the lead character without making her sound whiny and annoying. While it isn't difficult to see where the plot is going from a reasonable way out, the author manages to keep you interested right to the end. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Claustrophobic thriller
I enjoyed this book far more than other recent reviewers. I thought the sense of place on the boat - cramped, disorientating, sinister - was excellent and I liked Imogen Church's narration a lot. Perhaps a bit rushed at the end, though that seems a common fault.

Not As Good As I Wanted It To Be
A great idea, ordinarily executed. If you were pitching this to a Hollywood executive, you would say "Death On The Nile crossed with The Girl On The Train". Which sounds amazing. But then I solved the whodunnit part as soon as we met the characters for the first time. And the big reveal happens a long way from the end and we have a couple of hours of thriller to go. The heroine is not someone I would want to spend too much time with, and the number of times she has to wait "for a minute" to realise something just strikes me as lazy writing.
Imogen Church does well though. Good clear voice, great character voices. She injects as much drama as she can into it. And it was her that pulled me through to the end. I might have given up earlier if the performance wasn't as satisfying.

damsel in distress story
I'd read good reviews of the author's latest book so thought I would try this. It really didn't engross me; a pretty formulaic story of young woman getting into a tight spot - on a yacht this time - and then escaping. As she was narrating the yarn it was pretty clear that she was going to, and the twists in the tale were a bit underwhelming. The writing was quite crisp so I may still try another of Ruth Wares books.

Good story but awful narration
What did you like best about The Woman in Cabin 10? What did you like least?
I enjoyed this book overall, even though the main protagonist, Lo Blacklock, was unbelievably annoying at times. I found myself screaming at her when she did yet another inept thing. There was a good twist at the end, although I had worked it out and was not surprised. This book was let down by the narration. Imogen Church overdid the dramatic bit, increasing my irritation. I suspect that I would have enjoyed this book more if I had read it rather than listening to it. The book begins with Lo Blacklock waking up one night with an intruder in her home. This is not particularly relevant to the plot, other than underlining that she is neurotic, although one should not be dismissive of mental illness and she does take medication for an anxiety disorder. This is partly why no one believes her when she thinks that someone has been murdered in the eponymous cabin 10, the cabin next to hers on an exclusive small cruise ship. Lo has been invited in the maiden voyage in her capacity as a travel writer. The rest of the guests are also from the press, and they are all awful. The only vaguely likable character is Lo's boyfriend Judah, but his is a bit-part only.
What could Ruth Ware have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
I think the book could have been shortened and more tightly edited. Some of the dramatization was over done.
Which character – as performed by Imogen Church – was your favourite?
None. I did not like her reading at all.
Did The Woman in Cabin 10 inspire you to do anything?
Scream.

It was lacking something
I couldn't finish this. I felt that the author missed something. She went from hearing a splash in the water to immediately concluding there had been a murder. That was odd. Where was the build up of suspician or evidence. Really disappointed.

That was OK, but wouldn't recommend
Would you consider the audio edition of The Woman in Cabin 10 to be better than the print version?
I only heard the audio version, have not seen the printed book. and I don't think I would be more interested in either of them. Idea is interesting, but not original.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
The book made me very annoyed sometimes hearing the main heroine being always not sure, not been able to do something, always stressed and depressed. In the end whatever happened to her was the result of some very stupid actions; and then for another couple of chapters she would sit and think how stupid she was....
Any additional comments?
It was not a complete waste of time, but i would not recommend it to anybody.

Irritating on many levels.
If this book had not been an Audible version, I wouldn’t have bothered finishing it.
The character of Laura “Lo” Blacklock is a whiney whinging pain in the butt. So okay she is attacked in her own home, but do we have to keep having her say how stupid she is? I don’t like the format of the book.....I don’t like the expectation that this supposedly “boutique” purpose built cruise ship on it’s maiden voyage is a rabbit Warren of secret passages and “below stairs” pokeyness and drabness. This supposed journalist’s cruise is what in the trade is known as an educational, and yet it is supposed to last for a week? That, in my experience, is way beyond reality.....more like overnight if you’re lucky.
Too many disbelievable parts or episodes or experiences in this book to make it any enjoyable read......and I really hated (no it isn’t too strong a word for what I felt) the narrator of this book. The character voices are bad, or irritating, or ridiculous. Lo’s Brooklyn raised boyfriend, Judah, comes across as a very poor cross between a budget American sit com character and some-one straight from the screen version of a Mario Puzo novel. I feel that for me it was a major achievement to have actually listened right to the end......and then it was like the author had finished the book, but decided that she wanted to add a bit more but couldn’t be bothered filling in the gaps, so just wrote one more chapter which jumped ahead three months and didn’t explain anything from the time in between.
In summary....it is horrible! It’s a pity to waste a star on any of it.

Long !, worked out in 1st 1/4
Way too much of inside the head of the main character. So much self doubt & self flagellation & self ignorance got bored slept thru half of it the swearing was monotonous ok for someone in their 20’s wasted pages on panic situations ect ect

Great plot irritating heroine
This is the second of Ruth Ware's books I have read and although the plot is gripping the heroine left me frustrated. I found her highly strung and irritating . Despite this I would recommend the book and will continue to read more by this author.

Good story, terrible accents
The story itself is interesting and suspenseful but why oh why would you get a narrator to do lengthy passages of dialogue in terrible foreign accents??!! It really takes you out of the story and makes it hard to enjoy all the way through.

Slow to get into, but worth it
First 3.5 hours I was questioning whether to persist, but absolutely glad I did as the rest of the story kept me looking for opportunities in my day to keep listening to hear what happens next.
The main character drove me mad and I felt a bit trapped in her head (a place I didn’t like because she’s so annoying), but the actual events in the story had me hooked and gasping out loud at each discovery.
Definitely worth a read / listen.
