  • Summary

  • Kumbhakarna is awakened from his long sleep. The symbolism of Kumbhakarna in our lives is discussed here. He tries to persuade Ravana to give Sita back to Rama, but Ravana refuses to relent. Despite their differing views, Kumbhakarna decides to fight for his brother and goes into battle, knowing he will not return. Kumbhakarna fights bravely and well. Rama tells Lakshmana that Kumbhakarna is fighting for his dharma and hence cannot be defeated. But Ravana accuses Kumbhakarna of not fighting Rama directly, so Kumbhakarna prays to Shiva to show him Rama. But when he looks around, he sees Rama in everyone. This confuses him, and he begins to kill indiscriminately, thus losing the shield of his dharma. Eventually, Rama kills him. This chapter tells of the death of Ravana's son Athikaya, and Kumbhakarna's sons Kumba and Nikumba, whom Hanuman kills.
