• Exploring Desire: Understanding the pull of Chocolate
    Jan 18 2024
In the latest episode of "Nourish Curiosity: Eat Kindly," we delve into the mysterious realm of chocolate cravings and the deeper desires they may signify. Picture yourself driving alone at night, exhausted and overwhelmed, succumbing to an irresistible urge for chocolate. This episode poses crucial questions: What is it about chocolate that captivates us? What emotions does it evoke when we indulge? As we explore these queries, a profound realization emerges—the allure of chocolate is often a quest for feelings of peace, love, and quietness. Far from discouraging chocolate consumption, the podcast encourages listeners to give themselves permission to desire these emotions directly, without relying on food as a substitute.

  • Breaking Free from the Sugar/Food Addiction Cycle
    Jan 11 2024
In this episode the question of whether one is a food or sugar addict takes center stage. I acknowledge the appearance of addictive behaviors, making it challenging to envision a life where sugar is enjoyed in moderation. The revelation comes not from labeling sugar as the core problem but rather as a solution to a deeper issue. The crux of the matter lies in the establishment of a habit where food becomes the go-to escape for uncomfortable emotions such as loneliness, boredom, anxiety, self-doubt, self-pity, and overwhelm. This unconscious turn towards food creates a sense of powerlessness to break the cycle. Attempts to address the issue through diets or sugar avoidance often lead to two outcomes. One may succeed in adhering to the diet, only to find that a single deviation thrusts them back into the starting point. On the other hand, an inability to stick to the diet results in a repetitive cycle of attempts and failures. Both approaches hinge on the belief that food is the root problem. I tried these methods for decades, living in either a highly restricted or compulsive manner, neither of which proved ideal. The turning point came when the focus shifted away from food. Adopting a balanced and compassionate approach, the goal was to learn to cope with uncomfortable emotions without relying on food. My own experience and that or the clients I work with reveals that it is possible to break free from these patterns. Acknowledging that occasional returns to old habits may occur, the key lies in recognizing the learning opportunities within those experiences. With time, perseverance, kindness, and curiosity, you can reach a point where food or sugar is no longer a constant concern. The ability to choose whether to eat something is regained, freeing you from feeling compelled to do so. The illusion of addiction dissipates as courage is summoned to confront the uncomfortable feelings once masked by the reliance on food.

  • Why am I eating this way?
    Dec 13 2023
In this episode I talk about the two inner voices that create a chaotic relationship with food. The first is the voice of the child, it feels impulsive, out of control, careless with no consideration for consequence. Then there is the voice of the strict adult who tries to manage the unruly child. The strict adult is ashamed, fears our desires, puts us on restrictive diets, punishes us for our misdemeanors, and sees kindness and compassion as a weakness. When our behaviours are governed by either voice we feel either frantic and out of control, or we have so many rules around how we eat that life seems restrictive, and we fear trusting our desires because one bite outside our diet will open the flood gates. With either voice running the show, no one is really "at home." To find lasting peace with food and our weight we need to discover the inner adult. A voice of kindness and curiosity who is at home and notices thoughts, feelings, hunger, fullness, desires and so on. It is the part of us that says, go on, have some of what you desire, but also notices when enough is enough. It is the voice of calm, presence that realises that rules aren't the answer to life, but trusting the mystery and wisdom of that which we do not fully comprehend is. The infinite intelligence that flows when we return to ourselves again and again. www.fawnclarke.com fawn@fawnclarke.com
