• Episode 6: Formation is a Process
    Oct 8 2026

Life is itself a process of spiritual development and the only choice we have is whether that process moves us toward wholeness in Christ or toward a more dehumanized way of being.

    ROOT CHECK:

    • Where am I at the vending machine? What technique, method, or approach am I currently expecting to deliver quick wholeness? What do I do when it doesn't?
    • What am I mistaking for the whole journey? Is there a past growth spurt I keep trying to recreate?
    • What do I call "nothing happening"? Which dry or quiet season might actually be hidden growth?
    • What is shaping me this week? Not what I say I believe, but what my thoughts, habits, and reactions are actually forming in me.
    • Who is receiving the overflow? At home, at work, in school or church, is my formation making me a source of healing or a carrier of my own brokenness?
    • Static or journey? Is my faith a possession I'm trying to manage, or a response I'm learning to make?

    NEXT RIGHT STEP:

First, do the spiritual review. Mark the stages of your life and write a word or two or draw how you experienced God in each stage. Here are the stages.

Stage 1 - Childhood and early faith. To help you get started, here are some questions. What did God feel like when you were small? Think about rules, ritual, fiestas, family customs.

Stage 2 - Young adult years. Example prompt is where did you collect things such as programs, retreats, roles, achievements, performance hoping they would finally make you whole?

Stage 3 - Wilderness or dry season. What did you assume was wasted time that you now see as hidden inner, character work?

Stage 4 - Today, present moment. Where are you more responsive and less controlling? Where did grace redeem a detour, where did Holy Spirit’s power free you from old bondage, and where did God meet you at a turn in the road?

Second, name one vending-machine habit. Choose one place where you expect instant results, name it clearly and aloud. One you name that vending-machine habit, surrender it to God in prayer.

Third, tell one trusted person what you learned. Formation is not meant to be a solo project. Share it with a mentor, a friend, or a small group.

  • Episode 5: The Garden That Won't Stay Clean
    Sep 24 2026

Character formation works the same way as maintaining a garden. Listen in to hear what I mean.

    STRENGTH CHECK or ROOT REFLECTION:

One. Name one thing in your life right now that keeps growing back no matter how many times you have already dealt with it. Ask yourself honestly, have I been treating this like a one-time weeding, when it actually needs regular tending?

Two. Think about which of your own habits or attitudes came from soil you did not choose, things absorbed from family, from the culture, or from your friendships. Ask God to show you which of these are actually good plants worth cultivating and which ones are weeds wearing the costume of tradition.

    NEXT RIGHT STEP:

For the next two weeks, pick one row in your life that keeps growing weeds, one recurring habit, attitude, or pattern that you thought you had already pulled out. Every time you notice it trying to grow back, do not treat it as a defeat. Simply go back to the row and pull it again.

Keep a small tracker, on paper or in your notes app, of every time you catch yourself returning to the same weeding instead of giving up on the patch. You are not tracking how many times you failed. You are tracking how many times you showed up to tend the ground God gave you. Please know that you can’t do the weeding alone. You can’t do the weeding all by yourself, it can only be done best with the help of the Holy Spirit. Anything else other than that is self-sufficiency. Return to God and let Him do the weeding.

Then write or send me your story. Tell me about your own weeds, the ones that keep coming back no matter how many times you have pulled them, and what it has looked like for you to keep returning to that row instead of walking away from the garden altogether, what it has looked like for you to depend on God rather than weed from your own strength.

  • Episode 4: Ego vs. Eternity
    Sep 23 2026

A 15-second passive boxing match on the road made me think of my own character formation and the eternity mindset. Listen in to hear what I mean.

    STRENGTH CHECK or ROOT REFLECTION:

One. Recall the last time you felt your ego bruised, at home, in traffic, online, or at work. Ask yourself honestly, was I defending something eternal, like truth or someone's wellbeing, or was I defending my own fifteen-second kingdom?

Two. Think of a relationship where a small offence has quietly hardened into distance, maybe with a sibling, a co-worker, or a friend from church. Ask God to show you if what you are protecting there is your dignity or your pride, because those two are not always the same thing.

Three. Notice your body the next time you feel that flash of defensiveness, the tightened jaw, the quickened breath, the words already forming in your head. Before you speak or react, ask, if eternity is real, does this moment deserve the weight I am about to give it?

    NEXT RIGHT STEP:

The next time someone flashes their blinkers at you, literally or figuratively, cuts you off, corrects you publicly, or takes credit for what was yours, pause before you respond. Take one slow breath and ask, ego or eternity, before you say or do anything else.

Keep a small tally, on paper or in your notes app, of every time you catch a bruised ego trying to run the moment instead of letting eternity run it. You are not tallying failures. You are tallying awareness, and awareness is where character work actually begins.

Then write or send me your story. Tell me about your own version of the blinkers, the moment where your ego wanted to win and something bigger, or better yet someone bigger, asked you to let go instead. Did you catch it in time, or only see it afterward? Both count, and both are worth sharing.

  • Episode 3: Change does not begin with worthiness
    Sep 9 2026

Self-help culture, even the well-meaning kind, tends to run on a hidden formula - become better, and then you will be worth loving. Fix the habit, hit the goal, prove the potential, and love, approval, belonging, will follow as the reward. It sounds motivating, but is really exhausting. Eventually, it will break because there is always a next standard to reach. It is a moving target. But the single idea that we are loved not because we are worthy, we are loved because God is good flips this script.

    STRENGTH CHECK/ROOT REFLECTION:

Where have you quietly been trying to earn salvation through eternity when God has already freely given it to you? What makes it hard to simply accept Jesus’ gift of salvation that you still want to earn it?
This is less a question and more like an invitation. Come to Jesus. No waiting for a cleaned-up version of yourself that you bring to Him once you feel ready. Come as you actually are, right now - struggling or already successful, striving or already content.

    NEXT RIGHT STEP:

    • Listen to "Good" by Matthew West
    • Email me and tell me about a time you were striving to earn love that was actually already yours, at home, at school, at church, or with God himself.
    • Send me your stories, your testimonies of realizing you were loved first and any questions this episode left unsettled.

  • Episode 2: The Problem with Self-Help
    Sep 2 2026

In this episode, I talk about why bamboos don't break and the problem with self-help. Self-help tends to focus on the visible stalk but character formation asks a deeper question.

TO REFLECT, JOURNAL ABOUT & TALK WITH YOUR FRIENDS

    • Who is doing the work underground, in the part of you that nobody applauds but where your choice matters the most. Are you allowing that work to happen?
    • The wind will not skip you. What will hold you when it comes? Who is holding you now?

    ROOT CHECK

    • Where in your life right now are you focused on the visible stalk - managing how things look, rather than on the roots - who you actually are becoming when no one is watching?
    • Who are the people you are rooted with just like the bamboo groves, the ones whose lives are quietly tangled up with yours, who will help you stand when the wind comes? Or are you standing alone?

  • Episode 1: Join me in the Quest for Character
    Sep 1 2026
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THIS PODCASTThis podcast exists in that gap, between knowing and becoming, between awareness and action. This is not another feed of tips for optimizing your life. This is a quest - a slow, honest pursuit of character. Character is formed by choice not by chance. It is not a side project to a steadfast life, it is the foundation that holds us for the rest of our lives.Let’s use the acronym Q.U.E.S.T. Every episode starts with a QUOTE. This can be an excerpt from the pages of a book, a single line of poem or a stanza, a passage from Scripture, a thought-provoking social media post, or a song lyric. Quotes by me or by others. Then, we will seek to UNDERSTAND. I’ll offer my short my short ommentary or reflection on that quote we anchored the episode on. We will then attempt to EXPERIENCE it for ourselves by considering its application to our everyday lives grounded in the beauty of our Filipino culture and not as Westernized or as an abstract theory. We will then do a STRENGTH CHECK. We liken character formation to a tree, our recurring closing segment is about checking on the strength of our roots, a.k.a. root check, what is happening underground, in the part of you nobody sees but God. Lastly, we will TAKE ACTION. Of course, any talk about character formation that does not have a call to action is incomplete. We will end each episode with a Call to Action and an Invitation inviting your stories, testimonies, and questions into the next episode.HOW YOU CAN PARTICIPATEThis is not a podcast where you only listen. This podcast is also yours. I am inviting you to write to me. If you have a story of how you have changed, a question that has been sitting unanswered or that weighs heavy on your mind, or a doubt you have been afraid to say out loud, this podcast has a place for it. What are you actually hoping changes in you through this quest? Not what you want to know more of, but who are you hoping to become after you listen to the episodes and is your heart ready for the quest of character formation? What kind of soil represents your heart today? Sit with that honestly even if the answer is not fully formed yet. Half-formed honesty is better than a polished answer you do not believe.Music credit: Breakz Studios© Copyright 2026 | Emmylou F.
