Honduras—and much of Central America—was in turmoil in 1987, and some might argue that conditions have not improved much since. I was sent to Palmerola Air Base to provide weather support for our missions in Honduras. The Iran-Contra affair was still unfolding, and Swan Island was reportedly being used as a transit point for CIA weapons shipments and humanitarian aid bound for Honduras. My time there offered a firsthand look at the harsh living conditions in the area known as “Little Vietnam” and at Palmerola long before it became an international airport. Spiritually, the experience confronted me with difficult lessons about submitting to authority and the belief that resisting it meant standing against God Almighty.

We were a typical dysfunctional family of the 1960s. Our father, a second-generation alcoholic, ruled our home through fear—controlling water, electricity, noise, and daily life from the basement. If we walked too heavily or showered too long, he punished us by striking us on the head with his knuckles. Eventually, Mom divorced him and obtained restraining orders. Despite the abuse, all of us broke the cycle and chose healthier, more constructive lives. Learn how we coped with the pain and overcame the abuse, only by God's grace!
