  • Joint Task Force - Bravo Palmerola Air Base in 1987

Honduras—and much of Central America—was in turmoil in 1987, and some might argue that conditions have not improved much since. I was sent to Palmerola Air Base to provide weather support for our missions in Honduras. The Iran-Contra affair was still unfolding, and Swan Island was reportedly being used as a transit point for CIA weapons shipments and humanitarian aid bound for Honduras. My time there offered a firsthand look at the harsh living conditions in the area known as “Little Vietnam” and at Palmerola long before it became an international airport. Spiritually, the experience confronted me with difficult lessons about submitting to authority and the belief that resisting it meant standing against God Almighty.

We were a typical dysfunctional family of the 1960s. Our father, a second-generation alcoholic, ruled our home through fear—controlling water, electricity, noise, and daily life from the basement. If we walked too heavily or showered too long, he punished us by striking us on the head with his knuckles. Eventually, Mom divorced him and obtained restraining orders. Despite the abuse, all of us broke the cycle and chose healthier, more constructive lives. Learn how we coped with the pain and overcame the abuse, only by God's grace!

  • Operation Desert Storm: Seeing War Through The Eyes of an Air Force Weatherman

Weather affected mission operations 39% of the time. Logistics were massive deploying to Saudi Arabia. The commander of the 11th Aviation Brigade, Colonel Johnnie Hitt, are instrumental in the execution and success of our mission. Looking back, I consider it a privilege to have been one of those Air Force weather personnel. More importantly, I consider it a privilege to have served alongside the men and women of Det. 13, 7WS, and the 11th Aviation Brigade. The bonds formed under those circumstances became lifelong friendships. Through the uncertainty, responsibility, and danger of war, I also saw what I believe was the Lord's guidance and provision. What began as an assignment became an experience that shaped my life, my friendships, my understanding of service, and my faith.

Welcome to the Squall Line Podcast—where weather meets warriors, veterans, and the mighty works of God's grace. I'm glad you're here.

Todays episode is about David Allen Fiske Sr. My grandfather. He fought in the famed "Yankee Division" in WW1. He was there in the 104th Infantry Division and was awarded the "War Cross" from France. Quite an interesting man. Very gifted, yet at the age of 20, went through some of the worst fighting in WW1. Here about our soldiers, WW1 and what they went through on the frontlines. Want to learn more?
