Deutschland in der nahen Zukunft: Der Große Sandkrieg hat das Land fast unbewohnbar gemacht, die Bevölkerung drängt sich in gigantischen Mega-Citys. Riesige Farmen außerhalb sichern die Versorgung mit dem Nötigsten - oder dem, was die Regierung für nötig hält.

Die Erde, wie wir sie kennen, gibt es nicht mehr. Der Alltag der Menschen wird beherrscht von Hungersnöten und völliger Zerstörung. Die genmodifizierten Lebensmittel, die auf dafür entwickelten Raumstationen hergestellt werden, können sich nur die Reichen leisten - und auf den Raumstationen selbst sprengt schon ein Mensch zu viel die Kapazitäten. Werden es zu viele, werden sie ohne Rücksicht umgesiedelt. Doch im Untergrund entstehen Unruhen, und eine Rebellion gegen das menschenverachtende System bahnt sich an.

Michael schart auf Kopernikus immer mehr Anhänger der Rebellion um sich. Und auch die Rebellen auf der Erde versuchen alles, um die Mannschaften im All zu unterstützen - zur Not auch mit Gewalt. Währenddessen erreichen Cap und Larissa mit der restlichen Crew der Bethany's Revenge die entlegene Raumstation Gouges. Von hier aus wollen sie ihre nächsten Schritte planen und neue Allianzen bilden. Doch die Besatzung der Station lässt sich nicht so leicht überzeugen - und dann taucht auch noch Huggins vor den Toren von Gouges auf.

Die Erde in naher Zukunft: Alle Versuche, den Klimawandel aufzuhalten, sind gescheitert. Intensive Sonneneinstrahlung, unreines Wasser, verschmutzte Luft und Hungersnöte sind die Folge. Um den Hunger zu bekämpfen, entwickeln Biotechnologie-Unternehmen genmodifizierte Nahrungsmittel in eigens dafür gebauten Raumstationen. Es heißt, die Nahrungsmittel sollen allen zugutekommen - klar aber ist, dass nur diejenigen davon profitieren werden, die am besten zahlen: die First Class. Auf all diesen Raumstationen herrscht die sogenannte Balance-Regel.

Die Entführung eines Versorgungsschiffes schlägt hohe Wellen auf der Raumstation. Mr Hong, der Chef von SpaceSeed, kündigt seinen Besuch an, um sich ein Bild vom Zustand der Besatzung zu machen. Währenddessen haben Cap und Larissa herausgefunden, wer tatsächlich hinter dem Anschlag auf das Weizenfeld steckt: Lawrence Huggins im Auftrag von SpaceSeed. Die beiden zweifeln immer mehr an den Absichten der Kopernikus-Führung. Wem können sie noch trauen? Vielleicht Ludd und seinen Anhängern?
