Institutes of the Christian Religion is John Calvin's seminal work on Protestant systematic theology. Highly influential in the Western world and still widely read by theological students today, it was published in Latin in 1536 and in his native French in 1541. The book serves as an introductory textbook on the Protestant faith for those with some previous knowledge of theology and covers a broad range of theological topics from the doctrines of church and sacraments to justification by faith alone and Christian liberty.

John Calvin, a pivotal figure in the Protestant Reformation, was a French theologian and pastor whose insights continue to shape Christian thought today. Originally trained as a lawyer, Calvin left the Roman Catholic Church around 1530 and sought refuge in Switzerland amidst rising tensions against Protestants in France. His theological contributions are most vividly expressed in his biblical commentaries, sermons, and treatises. After publishing his first commentary on Romans in 1540, Calvin set his sights on the entire New Testament, and by 1555, he had completed his monumental commentary ...

In the realm of biblical commentary, few have displayed such unwavering honesty as John Calvin. He was neither a manipulator of texts nor a shaper of meanings to fit preconceived doctrines. His dedication lay in translating the original Hebrew and Greek with the utmost accuracy, striving to convey the true intent of the Scriptures. As noted by Dr. King, Calvins integrity shines through in his approach—he allows the Word of God to resonate on its own merits, resisting the urge to impose his interpretations or theories. Regardless of whether we agree with his conclusions, Calvins commitment to...

John Calvins Expository Treatises on Pauls Epistles have garnered acclaim from leading critics, a testament to their profound insight despite the challenging circumstances under which they were created. Composed in 1548 during a tumultuous period of conflict with adversaries of the faith, his commentaries reflect a remarkable blend of intellectual rigor and spiritual conviction. The theological insights of Calvin and the Reformers not only provided the theological basis to support the future massive missionary expansion of Protestant churches, but emphasises the Church mission as a consequence of their theology. This sermon by the Reformer focuses on St. Paul and his command to pray for all people. The mercy of God extends to all the world, he argues, and is not anymore restricted to only a specific group.

In this sermon, John Calvin ascribes free will to all people in the sense that they act voluntarily, not by compulsion. He elaborated his position by allowing that man has choice, and that it is self-determined and that his actions stem from his own voluntary choosing.

John Calvin (1509-1564) was a theologian, pastor and reformer in Geneva during the Protestant Reformation. He was a principal figure in the development of the system of Christian theology later called Calvinism. This collection of prayers comes from his writings on the book of Hosea.

The Necessity of Reforming the Church has been considered by many to be one of John Calvin's most important works. In this short letter, Calvin lays out his polemic for why the church must bring her beliefs and practices in line with scripture. Written to address the abuses and corruptions that occurred in the church during the Middle Ages, Calvin pastorally and forcefully addresses issues that carry into our present day.

John Calvin describes the Catholic Church as “very miserable, and almost desperate” in this 1543 work. He appeals directly to Holy Roman Emperor King Charles V, pointing out the failures of the church and demanding change. On behalf of the reformers, Calvin details his proposed solution.

The church reached a turning point in the sixteenth century. Worship had become a spectacle, the gospel was distorted, the sacraments were replaced by superstition, and ministers lived in immorality. To restore the church to the teachings of Christ, the Reformers cried out for a return to...

At the head of the list of Calvin’s writings stands his great dogmatic treatise — the Institutes of the Christian Religion. In a very literal sense this book may indeed be called his life-work. It was the first book he published after he had "devoted himself to God," and thus introduces the series of his works consecrated to the propagation of religion. But from its first appearance in the spring of 1536 to the issue of its definitive edition in 1559 — throughout nearly a quarter of a century — Calvin was continually busy with it, revising, expanding, readjusting it, until from a ...
