जॉर्ज सॅम्युएल क्लॅसन यांचा जन्म 7 नोव्हेंबर, 1874 मध्ये मिझौरी येथील लुवीझियाना येथे झाला. नेब्रास्का विश्वविद्यालयात त्यांनी शिक्षण पूर्ण केले आणि स्पॅनिश-अमेरिकन युद्धात, ते अमेरिकन आर्मीमध्ये नोकरी करून सहभागी झाले होते. त्यांच्या प्रदीर्घ प्रकाशन व्यवसायाची सुरुवात त्यांनी डेन्व्हर कॉलरेडो येथे क्लॅसन मॅप कंपनी या प्रकाशन संस्थेची स्थापना करून केली. अमेरिका आणि कॅनडा या देशांच्या रस्त्यांच्या नकाशाचे पहिले पुस्तक प्रकाशित करून त्यांनी व्यवसायाचा श्रीगणेशा केला.
