Am Tag der Priesterweihe der jungen Hero im Tempel der Aphrodite findet ein Fest statt, bei dem sich Hero und der aus Abydos stammende Leander ineinander verlieben. Im Dunkel der Nacht schwimmt Leander durchs Meer zu Hero, wobei ihm Heros Lampe zur Orientierung dient. Der Tempelhüter beobachtet die beiden Liebenden bei ihrem nächtlichen Treffen und erzählt davon, dem Tempelpriester, der auch Heros Onkel ist.
