Most relevant
Georgette Heyer's novels are a delight. I'm especially enjoying this one for its well-crafted romance and concise cast of characters. The enemies-to-lovers trope is a classic for a reason, and it's executed beautifully here. I admire Deborah's subtle strength, and Lord Ravenscar's cool intelligence brings a compelling spark to their dynamic. My only wish is that there were more romantic scenes between the two leads.

I love this story. Adore it. It’s perfect. GH’s wit shines in this one. The subtle way she shows up each character. The funniness of the heroine’s aunt. The fact that the heroine easily loses 600 pounds without compunction at picquet but scolds her brother for wanting that sum to buy his place in a regiment. I’ve reread this so many times since my twenties.

I love this narrator. Her worldview and her way of thinking appeals to me.

And yes, the moment the narrator starts reading you know if they’re on your vibe or not. At least I know.

It’s more enjoyable to listen to her narration. It’s like listening to a friend read it to you.



Listening to the part where Deborah kidnaps Mr Ravenscar and locks him in the cellar … she is one hell of a scary woman. Mr Ravenscar is cooked poor fellow.
He’ll keep doing outlandish things I suppose because she will trigger him.
Imagine burning your own wrists. The excruciating pain of it.
