Publisher's Summary

For millennia, Buddhists have enjoyed the limitless benefits of meditation. But how does it work?

In this groundbreaking book, world-renowned Buddhist teacher Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche invites us to join him in unlocking the secrets behind the practice of meditation. With an infectious joy and insatiable curiosity, he weaves together the principles of Tibetan Buddhism, neuroscience, and quantum physics in a way that will forever change the way we understand the human experience. Using the basic meditation practices he provides, we can discover paths through everyday problems, transforming obstacles into opportunities to recognize the unlimited potential of our own minds.

With an introduction by co-author Eric Swanson, The Joy of Living is a stunning breakthrough, an illuminating vision of the science of Buddhism and a handbook for transforming our minds, bodies, and lives.

Clearly delivering the message.

No supernatural mumbo jumbo... Nothing that you cannot understand. Simple bliss to hear this book. Science and medidation simplified. What Eckhart Tolle does is just the opposite. He includes supernatural out of world entities to explain the same concept while this book uses science. Very good book. Expect nothing from it.. Just a guide on how to underatand and be friends with your mind using buddhist meditation techniques.

abridged!

This is a great, great book. Unfortunately this audio version is severly abridged. Better to read the print version.

Excellent book about awareness

A book for people interested in the nature of reality. Concise, scientifically oriented and spiritual at the same time. Easy to listen to but requires attention.

Missing chunks from the paper book

I have the physical book as well and it’s very confusing because this audible version keeps skipping chunks randomly.

Worthwhile

Some interesting ideas about brain and mind; science and spirituality. I found it a tad light on practical tips, and a bit heavy on the supernatural towards the end. Still a worthwhile listen!

Accessible lesson in modern language

I've read many Buddhist and Hindu texts, but none have come close to this in terms of readability. Mingyar presents a very accessible set of instructions and insights written modern language with examples that most of us can relate to. There's no riddles, no hidden secrets, or unrealistic claims...just simple, easy to follow lessons.

Although abridged, good. Narration excellent.

This book is very good for an overall view of the Buddhist philosophy in regards to meditation and mindfulness. I almost enjoy the narration more than this basic book. These narrators are extraordinary. I would believe that they wrote the book. I don't really know how to explain it, but having faced many audio books where the narrator apparently didn't know what he was reading, so things didn't make sense, and having listened to parts of books where the narrator's voice is irritating one way or the other, I am so impressed by the men who read this book.

The Joy of living

This book is the first audiobook on Buddhist teachings I have tried.
While some books I have read (and subsequently re-read!) can be heavy going, I found this book to be remarkably refreshing.
The author uses simple methods to convey his meanings and while makes things easy to understand, does not oversimplify the subject.
Some sections seem hard to grasp first time around, but upon relistening I found the subject very enlightrning indeed. In fact I had to rewind much less than I have had to re-read other books on the subject.

A good starting point for anyone who wants to know about Buddhist teachings.

Excellent audiobook

This book is absolutely brilliant: very important, deep teachings presented in a clear, very practical way. It is also very encouraging it makes you feel that these practices are within one’s reach and very worth while embarking on. As an audiobook is also brilliant the actor reads it very well: good pace, clear and engaging.

Excellent read linking Buddhism and science

Well worth reading if you are interested in Buddhism or meditation/mindfulness. One of the chapters details a number of different meditation techniques I wasn't aware of. Lots of evidence around the benefits of meditation. Only thing I would change is the narrator needs to take breaks in between chapters or paragraphs, I find myself pausing it so I can take in the information and consider the big ideas put forward.

BEAUTIFUL! PRACTICAL. UPLIFTING.

A beautiful and practical introduction to some Buddhist principles. A positive and gentle perspective on the practice of meditation. This audiobook offers positive and powerful take-home messages around the concept of human thought, and it's interplay with human happiness.
