Publisher's Summary

While loyalist and traitor forces clash on a thousand battlefields across the galaxy, a very different kind of war is being fought in the shadows - a war of subtlety and subterfuge, unknown to many, but one that surely holds the key to victory for either side.

Rogal Dorn and his Legion prepare to defend the Solar System against the armies of Warmaster Horus, even as Malcador the Sigillite charges his many agents and spies with missions of the utmost secrecy. The future of the Imperium is being shaped by unseen hands....

Small stories within a galaxy at war.

While better than most of the compilation books in the HH series, it still falls short on occasion. We get to see many faces both new and old, but many of the stories feel like snapshots rather than full pictures.

Sigillite’s Inquisition and Grey Knight origins

Pretty good anthology collection of The proto-Grey Knights and Inquisition origins in the 30k millennium. If you like those characters and units it’s a MUST read. I’m just not a big loyalist fan.

So many great stories

So many great stories that are tied to other aspects of the war. The ways Malcador used other means during the war.

every story was outstanding

the depth of back story and the holes filled in the story between 30k lore and 40k were amazing

Not worth it overall

Usually I am fond of the Horus Heresy short story collections. While they always contain some poor stories, they always make up for it with some solid and one or two brilliant pieces. This one is the first exception in a long time. Starting out with two very good stories, it dips straight into bad to mediocre stories and never recovers. Skip this one, maybe chase down Reynolds ‘The Purge’ and Wraights ‘The Sigilite’ separately - the rest of the collection is sadly a waste of time.

phenomenal

I am always impressed with a great writing these books have and the great narration as well. It really sucks you in and let you experience a story through the character's eyes. I would have to say it's a slow burner but it will engage you quick enough.

A good listen

I’ve enjoyed listening to this collection of short stories. It fills in some little gaps in the history of the Horus Heresy, while also explaining some of the smaller event explained/mentioned in the core novels.

Mini Stories

some great mini stories but prefer it when a whole novel. Puts lots of mini snippets towards the bigger picture

Good but drawn out

I love Jonathan Keeble as a narrator don’t get me wrong but I do find that some of the anthology novels can get rather confusing.
Still a great listen however but a great listen in competition with some outstanding ones.

well narated but poor

honestly the worst of the heresy books i've either read or listened to, these short stories have no impact on the overall plot of the series and very little value to the setting as a whole. while some were interesting few held any substance, could have gone entirely unwritten, unpublushed, unread and unmissed.

Really good at fleshing out some characters

Some of these short stories are fantastic at bringing the listener in and connecting us to the characters. Some really interesting ideas portrayed and the exposition the sigilite gives helps understand him and the emporer whilst sign posting events to come.
Not a must read for the overall listener but definitely a shame to miss out on.
