  • The Seriousness and Simplicity of Human Connection: Kate Jopling
    Feb 2 2024

Hello. We're Masgroves. And we're on a journey. To learn about human connection. We'll be chatting with a wide variety of guests from around the world – from authors to healthcare professionals, from community groups to psychologists, and even to one or two politicians if we're (un)lucky!

THE HUMAN CONNECTION JOURNEY: Episode 07

This time, we talk to Kate Jopling, a policy and strategy consultant who has written influential reports on loneliness, ageing, health & care including the Joe Cox Commission on Loneliness.

In our conversation with Kate, we learned:

👨‍❤️‍👨 Human Connection is "just" humans being in contact and in relationships with each other.

⚡ The opposite of loneliness is? Well, the opposite is connection. The opposite is relationships. The opposite is contact. The opposite is all of these things!

💬 The conversation about Human Connection is being taken out of a sort of "warm and fluffy box" and is being recognised as really quite serious and essential.

👴 Feelings of loneliness can often been triggered by retirement, which make people - men especially - experience similar feelings to bereavement because our identity can often be wrapped up with work.

🚰 Ultimately, connection and loneliness are akin to hunger and thirst - which is a really powerful illustration of just how fundamental it is to us humans.

  • Connection is Love: Charlie Bethel of Men’s Sheds
    Jan 26 2024

Hello. We're Masgroves. And we're on a journey. To learn about human connection. We'll be chatting with a wide variety of guests from around the world – from authors to healthcare professionals, from community groups to psychologists, and even to one or two politicians if we're (un)lucky!

THE HUMAN CONNECTION JOURNEY: Episode 06

This month, we talk to Charlie Bethel, Chief Officer at UK Men’s Sheds Association, an organisation that supports community spaces across the UK for men to 'do stuff' and address issues of loneliness, anxiety and depression.

In our conversation with Charlie, we learned:

👨‍❤️‍👨 Human Connection is about love ('love' being the opposite of 'loneliness!')

😱 Human Connection is also about vulnerability - about admitting a weakness, a potential weakness, or a perceived weakness - and is why very often men struggle with it.

🚲 Social mobility is a good thing - it opens up opportunities - but it also means communities aren't the same anymore, which causes challenges.

😍 Human Connection gives us self-worth, because if we can help somebody else. It helps us too, and we feel that reward.

🤝 It's about having somebody there to help pick us up and support us when we 'trip up.'

  • Connecting at scale: Andreas Hoffbauer PhD
    Jan 19 2024

Hello. We're Masgroves. And we're on a journey. To learn about human connection. We'll be chatting with a wide variety of guests from around the world – from authors to healthcare professionals, from community groups to psychologists, and even to one or two politicians if we're (un)lucky!

THE HUMAN CONNECTION JOURNEY: Episode 05

This month, we talk to Andreas Hoffbauer, PhD who believes in intentional connections - at scale.

In our conversation with Andreas, we learned:

👨‍❤️‍👨 Human Connection is about the 'flows' between different people - flows of support, friendship, advice, whatever that might be.

🚪 Human Connection is also about opening up new opportunities - opportunities that provide us with new perspectives that affect how we think and behave.

☠ A lack of Human Connection can lead to echo chambers, as we're only talking in our groups, hearing the same voices.

🍀 Intentional connections at scale is about mixing intentional opportunities to connect, with serendipitous ones.

🕸 One way to see how connected you are at work - or elsewhere - is to map your network. How far does it spread?
