Kun Aiju ja Nina kohtaavat laivalla, alkaa matka menneisyyteen. Naisia yhdistää sama lapsuuden synkkä varjo, sota. Vuoden 1941 tapahtumat ovat jättäneet jälkensä molempiin. Toinen koki ne suomalaisessa sotasairaalassa, toinen Ravensbruckin keskitysleirillä Saksassa. "Elämän totuutta etsi", lukee sotasairaalan seinällä. Kappale totuutta paljastuu pienelle Aijulle, kun hän leikkauksen jälkeen vaeltaa sairaalan käytävällä keskellä sen veristä arkea ja haavoittuneiden kipua.
